General

This study is being done by researchers at King’s College London in partnership with the charity YoungMinds. You can find out more about our research team here. You can find out more about YoungMinds from their website: www.youngminds.org.uk

Many young people use social media (for example, Instagram) and have a smartphone. Although this technology is useful, there is concern about its effect on mental health and wellbeing. We want to understand how social media and smartphone use are associated with changes in mental health and wellbeing in young people. This information will help us learn when and what type of support would be useful for young people who are experiencing difficulties.

We are inviting young people aged 13-25 years old who have been seen at a mental health service in South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Everyone is different which is why it’s important for us to involve young people with a range of experiences to ensure our study best represents everyone.

You don’t have to take part if you don’t want to, it is up to you. Just let us know.

We are collecting the following types of information from young people who agree to take part in this study:

  • mental health and wellbeing
  • use of a smartphone
  • use of social media
  • relevant information from health records

If you received a text inviting you to take part, please follow the link in that text to complete a consent form. You will need to complete a consent form to confirm you want to take part. You can then follow the steps to join the study.
